Country: Republic of Korea
Closing date: 01 Nov 2019

The Head of Sustainable Landscapes sets the framework and strategic directions for delivery of policy and investment solutions under GGGI’s Sustainable Landscapes thematic area. The position will define and refine a set of solutions which advance sustainability and deliver climate impact in economic sectors located in agricultural, forests, wetlands and coastal landscapes. This includes solutions in (peri-)urban areas that are relevant to optimizing value chain integration, food and water security, nature-based tourism and advancing innovation in sustainable bioeconomy or building resilience through natural infrastructures. Policy and investment solutions should enhance revenue flows and benefits from greening crops, sustainable forestry, land-based and marine based commodity as well as livestock value chains and nature-based tourism. Policies and investment through Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) through new markets such as bonds, insurance scheme s and REDD+ and other results-based transactions are of equal importance.

Based in Seoul, The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is an intergovernmental organization founded to support and promote a model of economic growth known as "green growth", which targets key aspects of economic performance such as poverty reduction, job creation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. GGGI works with countries around the world, building their capacity and working collaboratively on green growth policies that can impact the lives of millions. The organization partners with countries, multilateral institutions, government bodies, and private sectors to help build economies that grow strongly and are more efficient and sustainable in the use of natural resources, less carbon intensive, and more resilient to climate change.

GGGI has a diverse portfolio of programs in developing countries around the world. These in-country progra ms, together with global products and services, focus on delivering results through an integrated approach of evidence-based green growth planning and implementation aligned to countries’ development priorities.

The Division is hiring a Head of Sustainable Landscapes to lead and provide strategic direction to GGGI’s work under the Sustainable Landscapes theme. GGGI recognizes that long-term inclusive economic growth especially for natural resource intensive sectors such as agriculture, forestry and coastal/marine sectors, relies heavily on functioning natural capital, i.e. healthy natural systems. Policies and investment which drive sustainable management of the earth’s natural resources on productive parts of the landscape are therefore key to deliver green growth and for achieving tangible climate impact, both in the context of adaptation and mitigation.

Examples of key areas of work within sustainable land scapes include:
* In Indonesia, GGGI takes an integrated approach, working with stakeholders at landscape, jurisdictional and national level across ministries and across disciplines. GGGI designs policies and financial instruments (e.g peatbond) to support bioeconomy business models which advance peatland restoration and value addition from peat-based commodities. The aim is to demonstrate the value of restored peatlands to Indonesia’s economy and in support of the climate agenda (NDC implementation), which also leads to tangible biodiversity, reduced land degradation and livelihood impacts.
* In Colombia, active collaboration with multiple levels of governments, private sector platforms and CSOs has led to a collective effort to design policies and financial instruments (e.g. loan and payment scheme through a local bank) in support of sustainable cattle farming, zero deforestation commodity supply chains and nature-based tourism. Policies and projects are aimed to bring the green growth evidence which demonstrate the importance of forests in emission reduction and adaptation while not undermining the importance to progress economically.

In program implementation, the Sustainable Landscapes thematic area takes a landscape approach. As such, GGGI designs transformative policies and investment plans which promote sustainable and efficient bioeconomy that ensures natural capital is maintained, accounts for as critical national assets, and builds into green business models. GGGI aims to demonstrate that revenues can be generated by sustainable and efficient enterprises/sectors which implement climate smart technologies and restorative solutions – thus building sustainable agroforestry/agrobusiness value chains.

Central to this position is the attribution of all interventions and solutions to deliver the following GGGI Strategic Outcomes:
* Reduced emissions for example through carbon stored in sustainably managed forests and soils;
* Creation of jobs and employment which economically empowers communities and are gender responsive;
* Reduced degradation and halt bio diversity loss through efficient use and protection of natural capital and;
* Strengthened ecosystem resilience to withstand climate extremes and meet adaptation goals through sustainable landscapes interventions.
* The position will set and monitor measurable results-based targets with the global team to ensure contribution to the above strategic outcomes and relevance to national priorities, SDGs, UNFCCC, UNCCD and UNCBD goals. The position shall seek to expand GGGI’s relevance and value-added in international platforms, tap into the relevant public and private networks and position GGGI as Global Sustainable Landscapes leader, and take part in setting the agenda on relevant sustainable landscapes issues with key donors, member countries, cooperation partners, and private sector stakeholders.

The Head of Sustainable Landscapes should contribute to country projects as appropriate for program delivery as well as for green investment mobilization.
